Lot Essay

Formerly a post office clerk, Neale was inspired and persuaded by his lifelong friend John Varley to turn to painting as a profession. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1804 and 1844 and with the Oil and Watercolour Society in 1817 and 1818. In addition to painting topographical views, he also painted insects.
