Fitz Osborn, Earl of Hereford, erected the first castle at Berkeley in 1067. Berkeley is, however, essentially a 14th century castle, the whole of the interior having been remodelled between 1340 and 1350 by Thomas, Lord Berkeley. The 'Berkeley Arch' is now a distinctive architectural feature, also found in Bristol.
