Title with large engraved author portrait, 22 large illustrations (5 engravings, 17 woodcuts) of astronomical instruments, large engraved view of the observatory at Hven, 5 woodcuts of Hven (the woodcut map printed sideways), 3 woodcut text diagrams, ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces. (Some discreet paper repairs at hinges.) Later vellum-backed marbled paper boards (recased).
Second edition, first trade edition, of one of Brahe's most important works. With the exception of the portrait and the engraving on C6v, replacing a woodcut, the illustrations are printed from the same plates and blocks of the 1598 edition, which were sold by the author's heirs to Levinus Hlsius; the engraving of the observatory has been altered to incorporate a lettered identification, which had been printed letterpress in the first edition.
