GOLTZIUS, Hendrik (1558-1617) -- OVID. Metamorphosis, verses by Franco Estius. [Haarlem: H. Goltzius (part I)], 1589-1590.
2 (of 3) parts in one volume, oblong 2° (281 x 346mm). 40 engraved plates after Goltzius numbered 1-20 in each part, early issue without Visscher's name on the first plates of each part and with plate numbers on left side of caption only. (Small hole in last 3 plates, occasional short marginal tears, some fore-edges slightly frayed.) Contemporary flexible vellum, two fore-edge ties (restored at edges, new endpapers), modern morocco box. Provenance: Julius Thibattier de Villebourgeen (inscription on first leaf).
EARLY ISSUE OF A RARE WORK, without Visscher's name as publisher on the first plate of each part and before the addition of numbering on the right side of the caption running continuously from 1-40. The designs of all the plates are after Goltzius, and the first set of 20 plates were engraved in his workshop in 1589 and the second set was engraved the following year; a third set, comprising 12 plates with verses by G. Rijkius, was not issued until 1615 by Robert de Baudous. Only seven of Goltzius's preparatory drawings survive. Work on the Ovid, simultaneous with his series of Apostles, took a toll on Goltzius's health, restored only during a trip to Italy in 1590-91. Illustrated Bartsch III, 0302.31-70.
