HOGARTH, William (1697-1764). The Works of ... Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath ... biographical essay ... and explanations by John Nichols. London: G. Woodfall for Baldwin & Craddock, [1835-1837].

Broadsheet (636 x 490mm). Engraved portait frontispiece and 155 plates on 115 leaves. (Without the 'suppressed plates', frontispiece, title and two text leaves creased with repaired tears, light soiling to title.) Later half roan, using original boards with original morocco gilt spine laid down, gilt edges. Provenance: J. Allen (gift inscription on title).

The inscription recalls the gratitude of a patient towards his doctor: 'To J.I. Banks Esq M.D. ... from his grateful patient D.E. Allen. (a "Resurrection Man")'. Presumably Mr. Allen was cured of a life-threatening illness by Dr. Banks. Undoubtedly he would have been aware that resurrection men, in the cant of the time, were employed in the suitably Hogarthian pursuit of securing bodies for medical schools and surgeons, occasionally 'resurrecting' newly buried corpses.
