FIRST EDITION. Published when Marsigli was only 23, this early study of the Bosphorus contains "valid findings, notably the discovery of a countercurrent with waters of different density beneath the surface current of the strait" (DSB 2, 135). The study concludes with observations of the natural history of the Bosphorus, its fish and crustacea, and even comments on the qualities of pearls harvested in it. Marsigli's later scientific work concerned oceanography, geology and natural history.
