TASSO, Torquato (1544-1595). La Gerusalemme liberata. Venice: Giambattista Albrizzi, 1745.
Large 2° (455 x 315mm). Letterpress half-title, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved frontispiece incorporating author's portrait, engraved portrait of the dedicatee, a young Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, after Giambattista Piazzetta by Felix Polanzani, each of the 20 cantos opened by a full-page engraving within separately engraved border, elaborate vignette headpiece incorporating a calligraphic argument, and closed by an engraved vignette tailpiece, 5 of which are full-page, full-page double portrait of Piazzetta and Albrizzi as tailpiece at the end, and engraved initials opening the dedication and preface, all engraved after Piazzetta by Martin Schedl. ALL ILLUSTRATIONS VERY FINELY COLOURED BY A FRENCH HAND at the time of binding. (Short, neat marginal tear in two leaves, small marginal stain.) FRENCH GOLD-TOOLED RED MOROCCO OF C.1770 BY ANGUERRAND, ROYAL BINDER, the sides with wide dentelle border of small tools and rolls, spine gilt in compartments, gilt roll-tooled turn-ins, blue watered silk endpapers, gilt edges, pink and blue silk headbands, the front turn-in lettered in gilt 'ANGUERAND RELIEUR DU ROY 1200 LIVRES' (light stain and small scuffmark on rear cover).
A MAGNIFICENT, LARGE, COLOURED COPY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VENETIAN ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE 18TH CENTURY. Only one other coloured copy of this edition is known, described by Brunet as having been owned successively by Mme de Pompadour, MM Delaleu and Pâris d'Illens de Meyzieu. While it is tempting to conclude that the present copy is that one, the Pompadour and Delaleu sale catalogues describe it as bound in red morocco 'à compartiment', which this copy is not, and they do not identify the binder, whereas Anguerrand has prominently tooled his name. The restrained but fine binding is the work of Pierre Anguerrand, recorded as binder to the king from 1770-77. He has not only signed his work on the front turn-in but recorded the cost of his work, 1200 livres; in comparison, he executed a binding for the Marquis de Paulmy in 1775 which cost 309 livres (Gruel, Manuel...de l'amateur de reliures, p.43.) Cohen-de Ricci 978; Morazzoni 256; Rosenwald Vision 52.
