Lot Essay

Chenets of this model, symbolising the Element of Fire and depicting Venus and the fire-god Vulcan seated on ash-container sarcophagi, borne by fire-breathing dragons on hollowed altar-plinths, are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, pp. 70-71, fig. 1.10.8. The figures also feature on related chenets purchased in Paris in 1725 by Carl William Friedrich, Margrave of Ansbach. An identical pair in ormolu was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 5 November 1986, lot 59.
