The later moulded rectangular mottled brown marble top above a spreading frieze-drawer decorated with trees and birds amidst pavillions, above a shaped full-front and two doors decorated sans traverse with hunting scenes of Chinese noblemen on horses and a wounded bear within a hilly and aquatic landscape with trees and two fishermen, the fall-front bordered by scrolled and foliate mounts and enclosing a fitted interior with a gilt-tooled burgundy leather writing-surface and an open shelf with three compartments flanked by six shaped drawers, One with a label inscribed in ink '3636 R L. XOX' and one previously fitted with an ink well, the lower doors enclosing a shelf and two open compartments, above a shaped apron, the sides decorated with a blossoming foliage, The back of the secretaire stamped 'C. WOLFF' and twice 'JME'

Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Franais du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 878, whilst a further very similar black-lacquer secretaire by F. Rubestuck was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 3 December 1981, lot 106.
