AN ITALIAN ORMOLU SEVEN-LIGHT CHANDELIER

The palmette-ringed corona with outset paterae above a fruiting boss and three chains suspending a tapering circular dish issuing six foliate scrolling branches terminating in flowerhead-cast nozzles around the rim and a central conforming branch, above the sides with foliate palmette motifs and a rim of flowerheads, terminating in an imbricated boss, drilled for electricity
34½ in. (88 cm.) high; 23½ in. (60 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A chandelier of identical design is in the Mario Praz Museum, Rome.
This chandelier, with its Grecian palm-flowered corona and thyrsus-finialed basket, symbolises night and is filled with poppies, emblematic of Hypnos, god of sleep and Morpheus, god of dreams.
