A PAIR OF EMPIRE ORMOLU AND ROUGE GRIOTTE MARBLE POTS-POURRI VASES
Each with a domed lid with berried finial and milled rim above a pierced foliate scrolling band and lappeted edge, the vase with a frieze of dancing maidens holding a floral garland, on a fluted waisted foot with milled rim above the stepped square plinth with egg-and-dart band above a Mercury's mask on each side and a lappeted rim, on bun feet

By family tradition these vases were given by The Prince Murat (d. 1944), Paris, to Baron Lejeune.

Lot Essay

A very similar pair of pots-pourri, but with handles to the vase, is in the Pilaster Room at Pavlovsk and illustrated in A. Kuchumov, Pavlovsk Palace and Park, Leningrad, 1975, no. 201. Another pair, now in the Hermitage Museum, was supplied to Emperor Paul I by the dealer Guillaume Culot.
