The gladiator after the Antique standing with outstretched shield and sword on a rectangular base with lappeted rim and foliate scrolling sides, the long side with a female's mask within foliage and the angles with foliate scrolling feet, the base converted from an encrier and associated with the figure

Lot Essay

The celebrated marble antiquity, known primarily as the 'gladiator', formed part of the Borghese collection in the early 17th Century and was acquired for the Musée Napoléon (The Louvre) in the early 19th Century.
