Inlaid overall in première partie with berainesque arabesques, the later brass-bound moulded rectangular top above an arc-en- arbalette front with two short and three long walnut-lined drawers, each simulated as two panelled drawers and mounted with a ribbon-tied female mask escutcheon and cornucopia handles, the canted angles decorated in première and contre-partie and headed by espagnolette masks with foliate garlands, the raised panelled sides centred by floral patera and C-scroll foliate angle-clasps, on scrolled acanthus pieds de bîche and later brass castors, restorations, the sides probably originally further inlaid, the mounts regilt, the frieze originally with a further small central drawer

Lot Essay

A closely related commode, almost the contre-partie pair but with a Boulle marquetry top and foliate escutcheons, was acquired by Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild for Mentmore Towers, Buckinghamshire and sold by the Earl of Rosebery at Sotheby's house sale, 18-20 May 1977, lot 135.
