Lot Essay

A painting delicate and supple in its execution, the present work is a study for La lecture (fig. 1), now housed in the Portland Art Museum, Oregon.

The young model with the auburn hair reappears in Renoir's The Piano Lesson (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), a commissioned work purchased by Henri Roujon, Director of Fine Arts, to form part of a permanent collection of the works of living painters in the Luxembourg Palace.

Sold with a photo-certificate from Franois Daulte dated Lausanne, le 11 mars 1985.
