Lot Essay
Henri Lebasque came to Paris in 1885 and soon fell under the influence of the Impressionists. He frequently used his two young daughters as models, and in Deux filles au bord de l'eau it is most probably Marthe, his elder daughter, and Nono whom he poses in their summer dresses and hats in a sun-dappled landscape.
"Marthe Lebasque recalled how her father would entice his children to pose for him. 'Come here for a little look' he would say, and they would be caught for a short while as his swift brush conveyed their form on the canvas (see the catalogue of the exhibition Lebasque 1865 -1937, February-April 1986, Montgomery Gallery, San Francisco, p.38).
