Lot Essay

Henri Martin travelled extensively, but it was the light in Italy which began to effect changes in his style. The process was intensified by his subsequent discovery of the light in La Bastide-du-Vert, where he lived in the south west of France.

The present work is one of Martin's rare self-portraits. Martin painted this work in Marquayrol, a large 17th century house in the village of La Bastide-du-Vert which he purchased in 1900. Marquayrol became Martin's favorite summer retreat where he would retire from the city between the months of May and September.
