Paysage de Provence is a prime example of the economy of tone adopted by Friesz from 1909 after abandoning Fauvism. In this work he moves away from bright colours and wild brushstrokes and demonstrates a more Cézannesque style using both the muted greens and yellows which so encapsulate the essence of the provençal landscape, and the rhythmical but strict composition of form.
