Lot Essay

This work was formerly in the collection of the interior designer Jay Spectre, who met Diego Giacometti in Paris in 1966. They were to remain lifelong friends, and Spectre has remarked of the sculptor's work: "My initial interest in Diego's furniture was as decoration, which is the way I see most things. But after living with his furniture, I have discovered the sculptural and artistic genius involved in its creation. The animals drawn from his imagination and memory appear to be real, sensitive and charming forms. He called them his friends, and undoubtedly they were. The birds, the cats, the dogs and the horses were all Diego's friends." (J. Spectre, 1990).
