On September 22, 1985 a group of three hundred professional workers completed Christo's temporary work of art The Pont-Neuf Wrapped.
The wrapping of the Pont-Neuf added a new sculptural dimension to the bridge joining the left and right banks and the Ile de la Cité, one of the most beautiful and popular architectural structures in Paris.
In the words of the artist, "When the Pont Neuf was wrapped, it could be considered as a sculpture. But the bridge did still function as a bridge; the boats were passing underneath it, people were still crossing the river by using it. The work of art borrowed one of the most succeessful parts of urban design. And all the elements of this urban design, all these resources, became part of art perception. Therefore it is not like a normal work of art".
