Lot Essay

This and the following lot are small examples of candlesticks of Islamic design. In general, copper-alloy objects with engraved and inlaid Islamic designs such as on these candlesticks have been called 'Veneto-Saracenic'. However, Bangs (loc.cit.) points out that only a small proportion of objects of this type could have been produced by Islamic craftsmen in Venice. As such, he suggests that many of the pieces, perhaps also including the present lots, were produced in the Middle East, but specifically for the European market.
