Lot Essay

This pair of English trumpet candlesticks is notable for its considerable weight, which may indicate that they were manufactured for a particular purpose, such as for use on ships, where the extreme heaviness would be necessary for reasons of stability. Alternatively, candlesticks made and used in Scandinavia at this time tended to be very heavy, thus suggesting the possibility of manufacture particularly for this market. However, there is no direct evidence that English candlesticks of this type were made in any quantities for the Scandinavian market, leaving the question of weight unanswered.
