For the subject see Matthew, XIII, 24-30 and 36-43.
Executed two years after the earliest, extant work by Lucas Gassel, and in the same year as the Munich Flight into Egypt, the present picture is notable for the perspective lines and vanishing point which are visible. This underdrawing indicates the artist's interest in the perspectival construction of panoramic landscapes (for which see H.G. Franz, Niederländische Landschaftsmalerei im Zeitalter des Manierismus, Graz, 1969, pp. 108ff.)
Gassel's depiction of Satan as a woman wearing a cloak like a Franciscan's cowl is illustrative of the anti-Catholic sentiment then prevalent in the Netherlands.
