Lot Essay

Vanvitelli painted several versions of this hitherto unpublished picture, of which the earliest known is dated 1697 (G. Briganti, Gaspar van Wittel, Milan, 1996, pp. 240-243, nos. 287-294). The composition, therefore, predates the earliest known painted views by Luca Carlevarijs, generally considered the first of the Venetian vedutisti, by some seven years.
