A village by a river, with peasants, townsfolk and wagons

This unidentified view was first depicted by Jan Brueghel I in the small landscape on copper of 1607 in the Brera, Milan (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, etc., Cologne, 1979, no. 153, p. 583, fig. 265), of which he painted a variant in 1609 (op. cit., no. 196, fig. 266), and of which a copy by Jan Brueghel II is at Aschaffenburg (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Jngere, Freren, I, 1984, p. 249, no. 69). The staffage in this picture is a simplified rendering of that in the Brera picture.
