Lot Essay

This picture forms part of a series of The Twelve Months of the Year executed (according to the artist's inscription and date on January) in 1727. Each month represented in the series can be identified by the personification of the signs of the zodiac and the appropriate actions of the figures. Thus in August, Virgo is represented by a virginal girl standing by an iris flanked by women bearing cut flowers.

Of the other pictures from the series, June and November were sold at Christie's, New York, 11 January 1995, lot 5 ($55,000); April and May are in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; and January and July are in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp.
