Lot Essay

Benedetto Caliari entered the workshop of his brother Paolo Veronese in 1551. He assisted him on various projects including that for the church of San Sebastiano in Venice circa 1556. In the present picture Benedetto's stylized interpretation of his brother's work is apparent. The Veronesesque physiognomy, the well-defined highlights on the curly hair and the impasto of the drapery can be compared with other pictures attributed to Benedetto, for example in Saint Peter visiting Saint Agatha in Prison in the church of San Pietro Martire, Murano (T. Pignatti, Veronese, Venice, 1976, no. A21, fig. 734 and no. A 213, fig. 896).

We are grateful to Richard Cocke for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
