Lot Essay

The treatment of the figures can be compared to Borghese's Saint Mark and Saint ukek and Christ with Martha and Mary (see P.L. Leone de Castris, Pittura del Cinquecento a Napoli 1573-1606, L'Ultima maniera, Naples, 1991, pp. 292-3). An attribution to Giovanni Bernardino Azzolino, another Caravaggesque artist active in Naples at the same time, has also been proposed.
