Lot Essay

Evidently by the same hand as a group of works, one of which is signed 'Salv.', assembled by Marco Rosci (Baschenis, Bettera and Co., Milan, 1971, pp. 61-2, pls. 158-163). The artist is identified by Marco Bona Castellotti, (La pittura lombarda del '600, Milan, 1985, pls. 533-4 and p. 674) as Giovanni Battista Salvi (not to be confused with il Sassoferrato). For other works by the same painter, see Christie's, New York, 15 January 1988, lot 138 (M. Natale and A. Morandotti, La natura morta in lombardia in La natura morta in Italia, ed. F. Porzio, Milan, 1989, I, p. 209, fig. 238), and Christie's, London, 9 December 1988, lot 25.
