Lot Essay

This is possibly a sketch for a stage-set for Acts III and IV of Rimskii-Korsakov's opera 'Snegurochka'. It is recorded that Levitan designed sets for this opera, and for Rusalka, A Life for the Tsar and Faust for Mamontov's private productions at Abramtsevo; see A.A. Fedorova-Davydova (editor), Isaak Il'ich Levitan: Documents, Materials, Bibliography, (Moscow, 1966), pp.34-36.
