M.P. Latri was the grandson and pupil of I.K. Aivazovskii, who send him to study under A.I. Kuindzhi at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1896. The following year Latri travelled in Turkey, Greece and Italy before returning to his studies, first in Munich and later again in St. Petersburg. He worked in different materials and exhibited his work in Russia and abroad. After the revolution he went to Greece where he headed the Royal Porcelain Factory and organised the French Academy at Delos. In 1924 he moved to France where his work was admired by N.K. Roerikh among others.
