Shaped quatrefoil, the sides with the gilt cyper of Grigorii Orlov within a laurel wreath, the flanks and domed top painted with a landscape within decorative borders, with gold-mounted stopper, marked with impressed double-headed eagle and circle with arrow under base

Lot Essay

Commissioned by Catherine the Great as a gift for Count Grigorii Grigor'evich Orlov, her favourite and supporter during her coup against her husband in 1762, it was designed after drawings by Gavriil Kozlov. The mounts for this service were probably made by Jean Pierre Ador.
