The case with gilt-metal handle to squat inverted bell top, later frets to the sides, the silvered dial signed Just. Vulliamy London within the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with false pendulum aperture, vestigal rise-and-fall ring in the arch, pierced blued steel hands, the four pillar single fusee movement with later anchor escapement and pull quarter repeat on three bells via three hammers, the backplate finely engraved with flowerheads and scrolling foliage and with a central basket of fruit, similarly engraved pull repeat pulley and original pendulum holdfast (now slightly adapted for the Victorian pendulum), similarly engraved movement securing brackets to the case; the backplate is illustrated on page 98

Lot Essay

The present clock's diminutive proportions, its single train timepiece movement and pull repeat indicates that it was almost certainly a bedside clock and as such was probably originally made with Vulliamy's silent escapement.
