Lot Essay

Compare the very similar monkey group in the Copeland Collection, illustrated by W. R. Sargent, op.cit., 1991, p.176, no.82. A pair is illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, op.cit., 1978, vol.II, p.594, no.619; another pair were sold at Waterfingby House Sale, Christie's, 2 June 1968, lot 992, and illustrated by A. du Boulay, op.cit., 1984, p.297, fig.9; and another, from the collection of the Hon. Mrs. Basil Ionides, sold in New York, 22 and 23 May 1980, lot 277. Other monkey groups are known, but these have the monkey's right arm modelled resting on the base and the vase is differently enamelled. The Copeland Collection have an example of this second type, illustrated ibid. 1991, p.177, no.83.
