A Rare Model Of A Roistering Dutchman
Edo Period (Late 17th/early 18th Century)
Seated astride a Dutch gin cask, one arm held high clutching a bottle as if to pour its alcohol into the goblet held in front of him, his coat moulded in relief and painted in iron-red, green and pale aubergine and gilt with peony and scrolling foliage, his breeches and leggings decorated with cherry blossom, the scroll base moulded and painted with a karashishi, his head moulded separately, some old minor restoration

Lot Essay

Originating from a Dutch Delft design inspired by the God Bacchus. Further coloured examples are to be seen in the Kurita Collection (illustrated in his book on Imari, no. 211, p. 369), the Rijksmuseum and the Idemitsu Museum

Three further Imari examples were sold in these Rooms, 27 November 1984, lot 9, 22 May 1985, lot 12 and on 18 November 1986, lot 14. A blue and white example was sold in these Rooms on 9 March 1987, lot 317.
