AN IMARI BOWL
Edo Period (Late 17th/early 18th Century)
Raised on three feet modelled as karashishi heads, decorated in iron-red and gilt on underglaze blue, the centre with blossoming branches of peonies and chrysanthemums and foliage, the wide and everted rim with stylised chrysanthemum and peony buds within shaped panels on a ground of scrolling karakusa, the reverse with an landscape depicting houses among peonies and blossoming cherry trees, the neck and foot with a band of chrysanthemum buds and scrolling karakusa, some old wear and rubbing to the enamels
