Lot Essay

Dr. Jörg Merz kindly confirmed the attribution to Romanelli on the basis of a photograph pointing out that the composition is close to that of the Madonna of the Rosary in San Domenico e Sisto in Rome dated 1653, X. Brooke, Mantegna to Rubens, The Weld-Blundell Drawings Collection, exhib. cat., Liverpool and London, 1998, p. 101. A drawing for the altarpiece, very similar in handling, is at the Walker Art Gallery, X. Brooke, op. cit., no. 49.
