AESOP (c.620-560 B.C.). Phaedri, Aug. liberti Fabularum Aesopiarum libri V. Amsterdam: Franciscus Halma, 1701.

Title in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved frontispiece by J.Goeree after P.Boutats, 18 plates by and after J. van Vianen, 6 head-pieces, 32 tail-pieces, 9 initials after van Vianen. (Occasional light spotting or browning, small neat repair to lower outer corner of the frontispiece.) Contemporary Dutch red morocco, covers panelled in gilt with centrally-placed arms of the dedicatee: John William Friso, Prince of Nassau-Dietz (later Prince of Orange), spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others with repeat decoration, g.e. (some scuffing, joints weak, the upper slightly split). Provenance: Charles Paulet or Powlett, third Duke of Bolton (1685-1754, inscription noting presentation, dated 1701).
PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE ROYAL DEDICATEE TO THE ELDEST SON OF THE SECOND DUKE OF BOLTON: the inscription reads "given to the Lord Marquis of Winchester by the Prince of Orange & Frise 1701". By 1700 the 15-year old Marquis was ungovernable according to his teachers, and he subsequently travelled around Europe, in company with the Earl of Shaftesbury, returning to Britain in August 1704.
