2 volumes, large 2 (525 x 347 mm). Engraved frontispiece, letterpress titlepages each with a large engraved vignette (vignette to volume I with a view of Oxford), engraved head and tail-pieces, some engraved initials, ruled in red throughout. Near contemporary dark blue morocco with broad gilt dentelle on all covers with a crown ornament in the outer line, centrally placed royal arms, spines gilt in compartments with an interlaced 'R', g.e. (very slightly rubbed). Provenance: St. James's Chapel (leather library book-plate, dated 1758); Frederick J.O. Montagu (bookplate).

A FINE COPY OF THE FAMOUS 'VINEGAR' BIBLE. Described by Darlow/Moule as 'a magnificent edition, printed in large type... Unfortunately the book contained many misprints and earned the nickname A Baskett-ful of Errors... From the misprint "The Parable of the vinegar (for vineyard) in the headline above Luke XX, this edition is commonly known as the 'Vinegar Bible'". The present copy with all characteristics for version 'A' (view of Oxford on title-page to the Old Testament, the New Testament with an engraving of the Annunciation, and the frontispiece showing Moses writing the first words of Genesis).
