Original brown drab apper boards, letterpress title on the upper cover and advertisements on the lower (backstrip chipped and repaired, light scuffing and soiling). Provenance: C.E.St.Leger (insciptions, one dated 1818). FIRST EDITION, issue on paper with misprints 'Aulhor' in line 4 of the preface, and 'despatch' and 'wizzard' in line 47 of the text, the date of publication appears to be early 1809 as the second advertisement on the lower cover mentions "An Addenda to the Catalogue is just published, containing all the new Works of the year 1808". Advertisement leaves at end of cantos 6-8 and 9-11 (in the 2nd volume), errata slip following title to cantos 15-16 (in third volume). (Cantos 1-2 and 3-5 lacking half-titles, some light spotting.) Contemporary purple calf gilt, spines with blue morocco lettering-pieces (spines faded with small chips to lettering-pieces). First edition of cantos 3-16, second (first octavo) edition of cantos 1-2.
