2 volumes, imperial 4 (375 x 265mm). Engraved frontispieces, one plate, 4pp. of facsimile manuscript on 2 leaves, one tailpiece. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with wide decorative border with medallion and leafy spray roll, with inner palmette and anthemion roll, the spines in six compartments with double raised bands, lettered in two, the others with repeat symmetrical design built up from variousm small tools, gilt turn-ins, blue paper endleaves, g.e. Provenance: C.P. (coroneted monogram).
A VERY FINE COPY WITH A ROYAL PROVENANCE, OF THE LARGE PAPER ISSSUE OF THE "BEST EDITION" (Lowndes), originally published at the huge price of 12 guineas. It has not been possible to positively identify the original royal owner, but the coronet (with two outer strawberry leaves) normally signifies a grand-child of the sovereign: perhaps Princess Charlotte Augusta (1796-1817) only daughter of the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and Caroline of Brunswick, and the patron of the publisher of the present work.
