Letterpress indices and subscribers lists in vols.I and supplement, otherwise engraved throughout. 6 titles, 6 dedications, 298 coats-of-arms (3 double-page) and 383 family trees (102 double-page). (Occasional light browning due to over-inking.) Contemporary red straight-grained morocco bound for Frederick, Duke of York, covers with an outer greek-key roll enclosing a wide rococo border of a pair of s-shaped floral sprays, palmettes, fern fronds, small sprigs and flower-heads, the spines in eight compartments with raised bands, titles in gilt in the second, the third with onlaid blue morocco label bearing the badge of the Duke of York, smaller oval onlay with volume number at foot of spine, the other comparments with alternate large urn or medallion tools, surrounded by various small tools, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (neat repairs to head and foot of spine of vol.VI, and some corners). Provenance: FREDERICK, DUKE OF YORK (1763-1827, binding, sale Sothebys May 1827, lot 1988 sold 26.15s.6d); Lord Leigh, Stoneleigh Abbey (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER ISSUE. A MAGNIFICENT COPY WITH A ROYAL PROVENANCE. The bindings are very similar to an earlier binding by Baumgarten (Maggs cat.1075 item 195), however, given the later date of the final volume of the set and the fact that Kalthoeber took over Baumgarten's business (including a number of his tools), Kalthoeber seems a more likely candidate. The badge on the spines is identifiable only as from a member of the Royal Family, however a more precise attribution can be made when allied with the Lowndes reference to the Duke of York's copy as large paper bound in morocco.
