Two works in 5 volumes, 4 (225 x 175mm). With 'Additional lives' text bound into vols.II and III. Engraved plates, extra-illustrated with a cut-down and mounted portrait of Walpole at front of vol.I of first work, manuscript notes (in a single hand) giving additional information published in the second edition loosely inserted at the appropriate place. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with fillet and roll-tool border, the flat spines in six compartments divided by roll-tools, black morocco lettering-pieces in three, the others decorated with circle and sunburst tools, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Provenance: William Ayton (bookplates); C.F. (unidentified early ink-stamped initials).
VERY FINE COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITION, probably limited to no more than 300 copies. The publication of the fourth volume of the first work was held up by Walpole in view of his comments about William Hogarth. Hazen 10. (5)
