PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE REPELS SCANDAL ON EVE OF ELECTION. Regarding the "Morey letter": a forged letter purported to be by Garfield in which he endorses the policy of importing cheap oriental labor. Garfield responds, 22 October: "I will not break the rule I have adopted by making public denial of campaign lies. But I authorize you to denounce the so-called Morey letter as a bald forgery, both in its language and sentiment."  Now widely accepted as genuine, Garfield is forced to denounce the 'Morey letter', 23 October: "Publish my dispatch of last evening...the mail has brought me the lithographic copy of the forged letter.
