MCKINLEY, WILLIAM, President. Autograph telegram signed ("William McKinley") as President TO VICE-PRESIDENT GARRETT HOBART, [Washington, D.C.], 2 September 1899, 1 page, oblong 4to, cancelled stamp. McKinley scrawls (in pencil) a hasty telegram to Hobart (1844-1899), his Vice-President: "Just returned. Mrs. McKinley's family all well. How are you?..." -- MCKINLEY. Autograph telegram signed as President, to Dr. Newton, Washington D.C., 16 November 1899, 1 page, 8vo, in pencil on Executive Mansion stationery, a note to the Vice-President's doctor just after Hobart had suffered the stroke which ultimately caused his death and brought Theodore Roosevelt in to fill his post. The President writes: "It is a great comfort to learn of the Vice President's improvement...Keep me advised..." -- MCKINLEY. Typed letter signed as President, with autograph postscript, to Mrs. Hobart, Washington D.C., 8 March 1900, 1 page, 4to, Executive Mansion stationery, warm thanks to the widow of his first Vice-President, sending his and his wife's regards. An interesting trio of documents regarding the unfortunate Hobart, whose death brought Theodore Roosevelt into the White House, first as Vice President, then as President when McKinley was shot in 1901. Together three items. (3)
