NICHOLSON, HAROLD, Diplomat and man-of-letters. Autograph letter signed to Sir Edmund Gosse, Seven Oaks, 27 June 1927, 2 pages, 4to. Nicholson mentions his admiration for Hardy, asking "Is it the haze of distance which makes them [the Victorians] loom so statuesque? I don't think so. I think they had a greater objective energy, a creative energy of active mind, than we have. The more I read about them, the more I care to know more about them -- the more forcefully am I humbled and over-awed".
