[WASHINGTON, GEORGE and WASHINGTON, D.C.]. THORNTON, WILLIAM, GUSTAVUS SCOTT and ALEXANDER WHITE. Partly printed document jointly signed, [Washington, D.C.], 3 October 1798, 1 page, small folio, accomplished in manuscript, printed heading "Territory of Columbia," THE FIRST PRESIDENT PURCHASES LAND IN THE NEW FEDERAL CITY. Thornton (1759-1828, architect of the Capitol) and his fellow Commissioners appointed to superintend the "Act for establshing the temporary and permanent seat of the Government of the United States," certify that on 23 June 1794 George Washington, Esq., purchased lot 1 in square 21 in the city of Washington for 200 "Maryland currency." Deed recorder's endorsement on verso. Pencil note at bottom "Willed to G.W.P.Custis (step-grandson of the President). -- Another, similar document signed (by Thornton, Scott and White), [Washington,D.C.], 3 October 1798, 1 page, folio, certifying that on 23 April 1794, Washington, purchased "lot numbered four, in square number twenty one, in the City of Washington", etc. Together two items.
