A Barr, Flight & Barr armorial oval dish from the Stowe service
painted and gilt with a coat of arms between supporters below a marquess's coronet above the motto TEMPLA QUAM DILECTA, within a band of gilt pendant flowerheads, the pale salmon-pink border gilt with urns and scrolling foliage between thick gilt bands, impressed mark, circa 1813 (some light surface scratches) -- 35.8cm. wide

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Grenville with the quarterly arms of Brydges in pretence.

The service from which the above lot was taken was ordered by Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 2nd Marquess of Buckingham, K.G., the arms in pretence are those of Lady Anna Eliza Baroness de jure Baroness Kinloss, daughter and sole heiress of James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos, whom he married in 1796. Richard was created 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos in 1822.
