A Meissen (Marcolini) portrait cup, cover and stand
with a key pattern handle and wreath finial, painted en grisaille with a quarter-length portrait of Admiral Howe, within a gilt oval panel above a titled, below gilt swags of leaves with chased ornament, the cover painted with a crown and sceptre, the saucer with trophies, within a puce scale pattern ground above gilt scrolls suspending trailing blooms, the rims painted with bands of beads, blue crossed swords and star marks, circa 1800 (some rubbing to gilt)

Lot Essay

Richard, Earl Howe (1726-1799) was commander of the British Fleet during the American War of Independence. He defeated the French on 'the Glorious First of June' in 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars.
