PHOTOGRAPH OF JOHN WAYNE, AS DEPICTED BY NORMAN ROCKWELL
Black and white photograph of Rockwell's painting of John Wayne, standing with cattle grazing in the background, and mountains in the far distance. Norman Rockwell was commissioned by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in 1973 to paint a picture of John Wayne, to commemorate Wayne's induction into the Hall of Great Western performers. Wayne was quite flattered by the honor and visited Rockwell's studio in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on November 29, 1973, to do a sitting for the painter. Rockwell completed a preliminary painting, then photographed it and sent the image to Dean Krakel, Director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, for his review. Penned in blue ink at the lower right corner, Rockwell has written: Dean, this photo of painted (painting) before additions. Norman.--26 x 23 in.
