With corner oriented design painted in black and red formlines, ovoids, circles, U forms and eye forms on all four sides with two bilaterally symmetrical designs one showing a frontal face at the top with joint designs at the bottom, the other showing two confronting animal faces in profile, top missing, bottom nailed on, with older spruce root lashings evident

Provenance
Descended to the consignors' family from the third quarter of the 19th century. On long term loan to the Taylor Museum, Colorado Springs from 1980-1998.

Lot Essay

See note for lot number 538. This is an unusually well painted and conceived design which includes finely painted U forms, delicate hatching and bold formlines. The regular adzing in the interior is also notable.
